The weather, again.

So I’m harping on about the weather again, because it’s the only excuse I have for not having much knitting. But it’s been hot. All week. It all came to a head yesterday, when the temperature topped 42C in Sydney. That’d be 107.6f for you US readers.
We escaped and ran away to the beach where Emily proceeded to fib about the correct application of sunscreen, and came home looking like an overcooked lobster. With sunstroke. Because I’m just her mother, and what would I know? Today she’s paying the price.
I’ve begun a sleeve for Autumn Rose, and that’s about the sum total of the knitting that’s occurred. In other knitting news, I put my name into The Loopy Ewe sock club lottery again this year. And yet again, I missed out. I was pretty bummed about it again. I mean, who doesn’t like the idea of a surprise package arriving in the mailbox, complete with sock yarn, a pattern and some fun extras too? But it seems to be a club I’m not meant to be a member of. I felt a bit dejected and unwanted at first, but then I decided to copy a couple of my favourite bloggers. I’m going to have my own Personal Sock Club this year. It’ll be so exclusive that I’ll be the only one in it! And there’s going to be some yummy, yummy yarns and some pretty nice patterns, too. (No fun surprises though, it’s a bit hard to surprise yourself, I’ve found!) I noticed that this concept is going around – I saw it on another blog I read this morning, too.
So, I’ve taken 11 sock yarns at random from the stash, spent a few hours matching them up with sock patterns from my queue, and made my sock club kits.

I’ve already finished one pair of socks this year, and I started another this week, so I’m hoping I’ll get to all of these this year. I’m not telling what’s inside, so all of you can be surprised when I open a package. Hopefully I’ll forget what I’ve packaged up too.
The packages have been put up out of Twinkie’s reach, because she seems to have a thing for paper bags containing yarn.

The curiosity may have been aroused, though.

  1. What a great idea having your very own sock club. I might do that with my stash when I get around to sorting it with patterns, which is one of my goals this year and then have it all knitted by the end of 2009. Yeah right! But the challenge is there.

  2. What a fantastic idea to rediscover the sock yarn lurking at the back of the stash! And you know that you’ll like everything the ‘arrives’ in the parcels.

  3. It is a let down when you find out you’re not in. I tried last year and didn’t get in, and didn’t try this year. But what a great idea the do it yourself sock club is! I could see friends or a guild doing this for each other, too. They could pick out patterns for your yarn and throw in goodies.

  4. hmmm….i like the personal sock club idea!i too got a “rejection” email from loopyewe – but i guess it was not meant to be…..btw – thank you for the twinkie shot-it made my day!

  5. what a good idea! This would work for other projects, too-but I dunno, a sweater a month? Nice pic of Twinkie. Too hot there! Here it’s been down to -10 F; how about a happy medium?

  6. That is too funny. I have a lot of sock yarn and am about to order some more, since you can’t have too much sock yarn. Maybe I should do this also. I can’t imagine it that hot. I love Sydney.

  7. That’s a great concept. I am planning on doing it too, although in typical ‘me’ fashion it won’t be for quite a while as I have too much on the go right now, but I think its a great idea. Hope you get some cooler weather. 42 just isn’t polite is it? 🙂

  8. What a great idea and I did read about it on some other bloggers thinking how great it would be to do that, although I take so long to knit socks I wouldnt get anything else knit for the year. I am sure you will be surprised what you have packaged, it is like finding some stash yarn you forgot you purchased. I hope Emily feels better soon, lots of panadol and fluids will help.

  9. I saw the other DIY sock clubs!! It’s a very clever idea, but it is hard to surprise yourself.
I hope Em is OK, sunburn is such a bad thing and heatstroke is very boogelly. Poor Twinkie, because I know that even if you made her a special sock club paper bag filled with scraps of wool, she’s still want to eat your real ones!! Great Twinkie photo!!

  10. It’s a very exclusive club isn’t it!! Love how you’ve packaged yours – very nice!!
And that Twinkie shot – best one ever!!
    Hope Em feeling better…

  11. Hee! I do that to myself, too – put ready-to-go kits in totebags, and have wonderful surprises years down the line when I unbury them again.
(Yes, years. My stash room floweth over.)

  12. If Emily would like her sunburn to feel better, tell her it was -2F at our bus stop this morning. Hope you all enjoyed Australia Day. Jeanne

  13. Great picture of Twinkie. I have to say I don’t want it that hot, but at least warmer than what we’ve got over here. Hasn’t been above freezing in weeks. What I wouldn’t give for 40-degrees. 🙂

  14. Donna, that is an absolutely brilliant idea.
Good luck with the sock club. No cheating!
So Em must be back at school again now. I think I remember you saying she was going to another school (won’t write it here). My little next door neighbour just started there today.
we must meet for a coffee soon. I lost my knitting mojo for a while there but it seems to have returned.

  15. What a clever idea DIY sock club. As word spreads none of us will have to join a sock club until we use up all our stash. I have another 9 to 5 sock on the needle and at this rate I’ll have a pair done in 3 weeks. I would pass out with temps that high. We had our 1st “snow storm” on Tuesday, I got 2″ and then rain onto of it gave us slippery roads the next day. Obama was right in making fun at DC snows. This city just about shuts down when they close the schools. Great Twinky shot.
