Cover Girl!

So, finally, the Cabled beanie and Gloves are done.

Specs:
Pattern – “Cover Girl” from Family Circle Easy Knits for Kids (Originally published in Winter ’99/’00 issue of FCEK)
Size: One size
Yarn: Recommended yarn is Cleckheaton Country 8ply. I used Cleckheaton Country Silk 8ply, same yarn with the addition of 15% silk. 3 and a half balls.
Needles: Recommended 4mm. I used 3.75mm for the hat, and 3.25mm for the gloves.
Modifications: Extensive.
I modified the hat by reducing the length by one pattern repeat. (8 rows), see this entry.
I modified the gloves extensively. The pattern is written for knitting flat and seaming. I can’t think of anything worse than seams in gloves. Or seaming gloves! So to start with, I just rewrote the pattern to knit them in the round. The recommended gauge is 22sts/4″. The pattern has 42 sts across the hand. That’s nearly 8″. Em’s hand is about 6 3/4″. And my gauge was off, so the glove was something like 9″ around to start with.
So I had to rip out the whole glove and rewrite the whole pattern. Tthe pattern I knit resembles the original, in that it has a cabled cuff and stocking stitch hand. The method of knitting it, and the stitch count is completely different.

I didn’t knit the scarf to finish the set. The kid already has plenty of scarves that she doesn’t wear! She looks pretty happy with the hat and gloves though, doesn’t she?
Hopefully she’ll wear these ones.
The Slinky Socks and Hanging Garden are still going strong, and I’m (im)patiently waiting for my yarn for the Hemlock Ring Blanket.
But right now, this is talking to me.

I’m trying to ignore it.

  1. oooh. that phildar yarn looks really pretty!! what are you going to knit with that?? also…where did you buy those pretty yarns from?
oh yeah…i forgot to meantion. i totally love those pink beanie and gloves!!!! well…you should know how i feel even without me mentioning it ^_^

  2. I love the slouchy socks and the Hanging Gardens, but Twinkie being swept is my very favourite thing!!! Pure rapture on her little face. Well done with the gloves and beanie, nicely modelled by Em!!

  3. Great hat and gloves. I have that book. Need to make those for my nieces for Christmas.
That yarn is speaking to me, too. It says “Donna will make something ravishing with me!!! She just needs to start something!!!”
That probably didn’t help did it?

  4. Em’s gloves and hat look wonderful. The Country Silk is always nice to knit with. What are you going to make out of the Phildar yarn. Something for yourself?

  5. why resist the siren call of purple phildar like that? what do you have planned for it? and that hat and glove set turned out great, very clever!

  6. Hat & gloves set all done just as the weather turns, eh? 😉 I finished DH’s fair isle hat about March this year just when the weather was getting warm and sunny. At least it fits his head! I have a bunch of Phil Ruban….what are you going to do with yours? Mine isn’t designated for any one project yet so I’m curious.

  7. You did a great job, the gloves and hat look terrific. I’m sure she’ll get lots of wear out them – they’re very girly and in such a great colour after all. If that yarn is talking, I’d take serious notice if I were you. ;o)

  8. Hey Em you look great in the set!
And oh my gosh that’s some beautiful yarn you’ve got there! Just a lovely shade of purple! Yum!

  9. I’ve just caught up on your posts and all of your FOs. Love all the pink!! (though I know you probably need a color change by now!!). I’ve not made a pair of gloves but would like to. I’ll need to look into converting them in the round which sounds a lot easier than all that seaming.
Twinkie is adorable as usual and must be enjoying the outdoors again! I hope Em is fully recovered now and back on her toes. Tell her she will want *all* her scarves, hats, and gloves on in NYC. The wind whips down those streets and it can get really bitter out there. You cannot dress too warmly!!!
