Emily spotted this top in Family Circle Easy Knits for Kids, which I borrowed from the local library.
Coincidently, elann.com had the yarn on sale, so it jumped into my shopping cart. I’m sure you all understand. 🙂 It’s Classic Elite Imagine, 53% cotton and 47% rayon.
It arrived today, and I hurriedly wound a ball, then I read the label. Dry Clean Only. What the? Surely I can hand wash it or something. Opinions, please. I really don’t want to go to the trouble to make a top she loves, then have to send it off for drycleaning every time she wears it!
Apart from that it seems nice. Not much give, but it is a high cotton content, and the rayon is a nice purple shiny bit through the middle.
I hate to say it, but it’s the old swatch and wash! YUP. knit it up. Wash it by hand. See how it survives. Wash it again. And again. Then you’ll know if you want to use it.

I own a ton of stuff that says dry clean only. Mind you, I’d never pay full price for a dry clean only piece. What do I do? Spot wash, or, use shout out wipes, or, hand wash, or, wash on gentel in a garment bag, or spray with fabreeze/ wrinkle releaser. I have to admit, I have killed a few wool items doing this, but not too many. I agree with Sandy, a swatch to wash would be a good idea.
Here in the states we have a bag with a dry cleaning cloth that can be put in the dryer. It comes in a little kit, one brand is Dryel. http://www.dryel.com/usa/index.shtml
I have quit sending anything to the drycleaners since I found this. I spot clean (as others mentioned) then use this in the dryer.
Swatching and test washing is an excellent idea too.
I was gonna recommend handwashing or those dry cleaning sheets. I haven’t tried Dryel myself, but I have heard good things about it. How’s Twinky feeling–back to her old self yet?
